I have been crying about this for a long time. Perhaps it is reaching a critical mass so that change will be made. We consider ourselves so civilized, yet the way people who are different, [in any fundamental and significant way] are treated, has not really evolved much from an injured bird, no longer accepted as part of the flock. It is way past time to fix this. Maybe now is the time. I hope so.
